The editorship of this first edition is attributed to Sir Philip Francis of the Middle Temple and later of the Supreme consular court of the Levant. This attribution seems first to have been made by Thomas Secombe, author of the introduction to the 1908 reprint (cf. Times literary supplement, Jan. 1, 1909)--Cambridge bibliography of English literature credits P. Francis with the editorship and, more recently, further documentation is contributed by David Buchanan in The treasure of Auchinleck ... N.Y., McGraw-Hill [1974]
