Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1814. First edition, 1814. Very worn. Full calf with gilt ruled spine, black spine label, (xvi, 510). Double ex-library, first sold as a duplicate from the New York State Library, acquired by the Forbes Library in Northampton, MA, and again deacquisitioned. The story of a British actor who lived and travelled in the United States during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, written ostensibly as an apology for his less-than-virtuous life. However, the book has greater modern interest as a personal travel journal, for the author travelled extensively through the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states during that interesting period of American history. . First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Octavo. pp. [2 (half-title)], xvi, 510. Illustrated with a stipple-engraved frontispiece plate by Philadelphia engraver John Boyd. Bound in late 19th century half cloth and marbled paper over boards, edges sprinkled red. Owner's name in pencil on front free endpaper, written above a mounted albumen carte-de-visite portrait photograph dated in pencil: "Jan. 2,1866". The photograph is also captioned in pencil: "J. Fennell" (Fennell died in the year 1816). Bookplate of American poet Coman Leavenworth on the front paste down, the front hinge is split but still holding snug, modest age-toning and foxing, very good. Fennell came to America in 1793, making his first appearance in Philadelphia, where he became an idol among the literary youth in that city; he also was a favorite actor at the John Street Theatre in Manhattan. A unique copy from the library of Coman Leavenworth, with a carte-de-visite portrait of an unknown man, perhaps an American actor of the 1860s.
