ye see.

privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things 24. For I tell you many prophets and kings have desired to see those things ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things ye hear, and have not heard them.

25. ¶ Now, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal bliss? 26. He said to him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27. Then he answered, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28. Then he replied, Thou hast answered right; do this, and thou shalt live.

29. But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, Who is my neighbour? 30. And Jesus said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31. And by chance, a certain priest came that way, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and, having seen him, he had compassion on him, 34. And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said to him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay

thee.

36. Who of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour to him who fell among the robbers? 37. Then he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus to him, Go thou, and do likewise.

38. Now as they journeyed, he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house. 39. And she

had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his words. 40. But Martha was harrassed by much attendance, and came to him, saying, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to attend alone? Command her, therefore, to help

me.

41. But Jesus said to her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: 42. But one thing is needful; and Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

CHAP. XI.

CHRIST TEACHETH TO PRAY.

Now he was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

2. Then he said to them, When ye pray say, Our Father who art in heaven; Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. 3. Give us for the day our necessary food. 4. And forgive us our trespasses; for we also forgive every one that trespasseth against us. And bring us not to trial, but deliver us from evil.

5. Then he said to them, Which of you having a friend, shall go to him at midnight, and say, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6. For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? 7. And he from within shall say, Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; so I cannot rise and give thee. 8. I tell you, Tho' he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet

because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

9. I tell you also, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. 10. For every one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

11. If a son ask bread from any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or, if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 12. Or, if he ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 18. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

14. Now he cast out a devil that was dumb. And when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the multitudes wondered.

16.

15. But some of them said, He casteth out devils thro' Beelzebub, the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought from him a sign in the sky. 17. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against itself falleth. 18. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils thro' Beelzebub, 19. But if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your disciples cast them out? (as they do it by invocation of the name of Jehovah) they shall condemn you in the judgment. 20. But if I by the power of God cast out devils, then the kingdom of God is come to you.

21. When a strong man, armed, guards his habitation, his goods are safe. 22. But when a stronger than he comes upon him, and overcomes him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

23. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.

24. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man (that is a Jew) he walketh thro' dry places (of the Gentiles) seeking rest, and finding none (when watered by the gospel), he saith, I will return to my house out of which I came; 25. And when he

comes, he finds it swept and set in order (ready prepared for him). 26. Then he takes to him seven spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: And the last state of that man is worse than the first.

27. As he spake these things, a certain woman of the multitude spake aloud, saying to him, Blessed is thy mother and she that suckled thee. 28. But he said, Yea, rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it.

29. Now the multitudes being come together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign, and none shall be given it, but that of Jonas the prophet. 30. For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. 31. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from a far country to hear Solomon's wisdom, and behold a greater than Solomon is here. 32. The men of Nineve shall rise up in judgment with this generation, and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold a greater than Jonas is here.

33. No man having lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, nor under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light, (the gospel light is not confined to private places.) 34. The eye is the light of the body, when thine eye is single (and clear, or thy mind impartial) thy whole body (and soul) also is enlightened, but when thine eye is dim, (and thy mind corrupt and partial) thy body (and soul) also is in darkness. 35. Take heed therefore that the light which is in

thee be not darkness (or error and prejudice.) 36. If thy whole body (and soul) be enlightened, having no part dark, the whole (conversation) shall be as full of light, (or virtue) as when a lamp enlightens thee by its brightness.

37. Now as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him; so he went in, and sat down to meat.

38. And the Pharisee beholding, wondered that he had not first washed hands before dinner.

39. But the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but your inside is full of rapine and maliciousness. 40. Ye fools! did not he that made the outside, make the inside also? 41. But rather give a portion of what is before you to the needy, and behold all things are clean (Job xxxi. 17. and comfortable) to you. 42. But wo to you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint, and rue, and all manner of herbs, and pass over justice and the love of God: these ought ye to do, and not leave the other undone. 43. Wo to you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. 44. Wo to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

45. Then one of the lawyers replied to him, Master, thus saying, thou reproachest us also,

46. Then he said, Wo to you also ye lawyers! for ye lade men with grievous burdens, and ye yourselves touch them not with one of your fingers, (ye do not as ye would be done to, and as ye bid others do).

47. Wo to you! for ye build the prophets' scpulchres, whom your fathers killed.

48 Ye testify therefore (by the same persecuting spirit) that ye consent to your fathers' deeds;
