said, Why? what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, Let him be crucified.

24. When Pilate could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person; see ye to it. 25. Then answered all the people, saying, His blood be on us, and on our children.

26. Then he released Barabbas to them; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

27. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the judgment hall, and gathered to him the whole band. 28. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29. And plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, king of the Jews! 30. And they spit on him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32. And coming out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon, whom they compelled to bear his cross.

33. And having come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, A place of a skull, 34. They gave him vinegar to drink, mingled with gall: but hav ing tasted it, he would not drink.

35. Now they crucified him, and parted his garments among them; casting lots: that what was spoken by the prophet, might be fulfilled: They parted my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots, (Psalm xxii.)

36. Then sitting down, they watched him there; 37. And put over his head this accusation written, THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38. There were two robbers crucified with him; one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39. Now they that passed by reviled him, shaking their heads, 40. And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41. Likewise also the chief priests with the scribes and elders, mocking him said, 42. He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, 'if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44. One of the robbers also, that was crucified with him, reproached him therewith.

45. Now, from the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour. 46. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? that is, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47. Some of them that stood by, hearing that, said, he calleth for Elias.

48. Now immediately one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49. The rest said, forbear; let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

50. Jesus having cried again with a loud voice, expired.

51. Now, behold, the vail of the temple was divided in two, from the top to the bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks rent, 52. And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints who slept arose 53. Out of the graves, after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

54. Now, the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, seeing the earthquake, and those things that happened, feared greatly, saying, Truly, this was the Son of God.

55. And many women were there beholding afar off, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him: 56. Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

57. At even there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself was Jesus' disciple: 58. And went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus, which Pilate commanded to be delivered.

59. And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it in á clean linen cloth, 60. And laid it in his own new tomb, which he hewed out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the sepulchre's door, and departed. 61. And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite to the sepulchre.

62. Now, the next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and Pharisees came to Pilate, 63. Saying, Sir, we remember that this deceiver said, while he was alive, within three days I will rise again. 64. Command therefore the sepulchre to be made securé till the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead; so the last deceit shall be worse than the first.

65. Pilate said to them, Take a guard; go away, make it as secure as ye can. 66. So they went, and secured the sepulchre, sealing the stone, and setting a guard.

CHAP. XXVIII.

CHRIST'S RESURRECTION DECLARED.

BUT the night after the Sabbath, at the dawn of the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre.

2. Now lo, there had been a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven,

and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. 4. And for fear of him the keepers trembled, and became as dead

men.

5. Then the angel said to the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus who was crucified. 6. He is not here; for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay: 7. Now go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and lo, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

8. Now they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

9. But as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, Hail! then they came and took hold of his feet, and worshipped

him.

10. Then said Jesus to them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren to go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

12.

11. Now, as they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city, and declared to the chief priests all things that were done. And being assembled with the elders, and taking counsel, they gave much money to the soldiers, 13. Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14. And if the governor hears this, we will prevail on him, and secure you (from punishment.)

15. So they took the money, and did as they were taught. And this saying is commonly reported among the Jews unto this day.

16. Then the eleven disciples went away to Galilee, to a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

17. And when they saw him they worshipped; but some stood at a distance.

18. But Jesus came and spake to them, saying, All authority is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19. Go ye, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; 20. Teaching them to observe all things which I commanded you: and lo, I am with you (by my spiritual presence, John xvi. 7.) always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

THE GOSPEL HISTORY WRITTEN BY

MARK.

CHAP. I.

JOHN BAPTIST'S OFFICE.

THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God, (in the Baptist's ministry:) 2. As it is written in the prophets, Mal. iii. 1. Isa. xl. 3. Behold, I send my messenger (the Baptist) before thy face, to prepare thy way before thee; 3. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight (by sincere repentance and righteousness.)

4. John baptized in the wilderness, and preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 5. And all they of Judea went out to him, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

6. John was clothed (like a prophet) with a garment of camel's hair, and had a leathern girdle about his loins, and he ate carob-beans and wild honey; 7. He also preached, saying, One migh tier than I cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
