Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. He came, therefore, and took it. 39. And Nicodemus came also, who at first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. 40. Then they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury (the rich and great.) 41. Now, in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein never man was yet laid. 42. There they laid Jesus, therefore, because of the Jews' preparation-day; for the sepulchre was near. CHAP. XX. OF CHRIST'S RESURRECTION. THE first day of the week Mary Magdalene cometh early, while it was yet dark, to the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. 2. Then she ran to Simon Peter, and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. 3. Peter, therefore, and that other disciple, ran both together to the sepulchre. 4. And the other outran Peter, and came first to it. 5. And he, stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet he went not in. 6. Then came Simon Peter and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lying. 7. And the napkin that was about his head not lying with them, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8. Then went in also that other disciple who came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. 9. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. 10. Then the disciples went again to their own home. 11. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and, as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12. And seeth two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13. And they say to her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14. When she had said thus, she turned back, and seeth Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus. 15. Jesus saith to her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith to him, Sir, if thou hast carried him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16. Jesus saith to her, Mary. She turned, and saith to him, Rabboni; which signifies Master. 17. Jesus saith to her, Hold me not, for I do not yet ascend to my Father; but go to my brethren, and tell them that I will ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord; and that he had spoken these things to her. 19. Now the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, Peace be to you. 20. And having so said, he shewed to them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord.. 21. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be to you; as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you (to teach). 22. And having said this, he breathed on them, and saith to them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit. 23. To whomsoever ye rightly declare VOL. III. L1 31 their sins to be remitted, they are remitted; and to whomsoever ye declare their sins not to be remitted, they are not remitted. 24. But Thomas, called Didymus, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25. The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26. And after eight days, his disciples were within again, and Thomas with them, when Jesus came, the doors being shut, (as before, ver. 19. he having opened them unobservedly), he stood in the midst, and said, Peace be to you. 27. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. 28. Then Thomas said to him, My Lord, and my God! 29. Jesus saith to him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me thou hast believed; blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30. And many other signs did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31. But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life. (or bliss) through his name, (as the Saviour). CHAP. XXI. CHRIST APPEARETH TO HIS DISCIPles. AFTER these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias in this manner: 2. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus (the twin), and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3. Simon Peter saith to them, I go to fish. They say to him, We also go with thee. They departed, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5. Then Jesus saith to them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6. Then he said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find some. They cast it therefore; and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7. Therefore, that disciple whom Jesus loved, saith to Peter, It is the Lord. Now, when Simon Peter heard that, he girt his fishers' coat about him, for he was without it, and cast himself into the sea. 8. And the other disciples came in the vessel, being not far from land, but about two hundred cubits, dragging the net with fishes. 9. And being landed, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10. Jesus saith to them, Bring some of the fishes which ye have now caught. 11. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty-three; and tho' there were so many, yet the net was not broken. 12. Jesus saith to them, Come and dine; but none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord-(for tho' their astonishment made them doubt a little, they were ashamed of it). 13. Jesus then cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead. 15. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him, Feed my lambs, (even weak believers). 16. He saith to him again, the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith to him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him, Feed my sheep. 17. He saith to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, Lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he said to him the third time, Lovest thou me? Then he said to him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my sheep. 18. Verily, verily, I tell thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. 19. This he spake, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And having spoken this, he saith to him, Follow me. 20. Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? 21. Peter, seeing him, saith to Jesus, Lord, what shall this man do? 22. Jesus saith to him, If I will that he tarry till I come (to judge Jerusalem, or the world), what is that to thee? follow thou me. 23. Therefore this report went abroad among the brethren, that this disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not to him, He shall not die; but, if I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? 24. This is the disciple who testifieth these things, and wrote them, and we know that his testimony is true. 25. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were every one written, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. |
